The Root Cause of Imposter Syndrome
Imposter Syndrome is something that most of us struggle with at some point in our lives. It may present as a tiny voice inside of your head saying “I don’t deserve this,” or “I’m not qualified for this.” It can even present as an underlying feeling that you’re just not “good enough” or as a sense of disconnect from your daily life. However, most of the time, these feelings are unfounded. And by understanding where this feeling stems from, we can learn how to understand and move past feelings of inadequacy.
What Causes Imposter Syndrome?
If you constantly push your mind to override your body’s capacity, you end up in survival mode. Though you’re not fully present, you may put on a mask and act as if you are. This leads to feeling like an imposter–unable to truly connect with yourself and others. You’ve hit your emotional capacity, but keep moving forward without giving yourself any time to rest or recover.
Imposter syndrome ultimately stems from feeling disconnected from yourself. When you live an embodied experience, and can be fully present with how you feel in your body, THAT is when you’re most authentic.
This means that if you’re tired, you don’t go against your biology and push yourself into a stress response to conceal the reality of your experience anymore. Make the decision to allow yourself to show up tired if that’s how you feel–be present with those feelings.
The more you allow yourself to embrace and accept your true experience–emotions and sensations that you feel–the less you will feel like an imposter. So, the next time you’re absolutely worn out or feel like you’ve pushed yourself to your limit, instead of trying to power through, sit with those feelings. Accept them. Allow them to shine through. Don’t be afraid to let your friends and family know that you’re tired or feeling disconnected. Because the more grace you give yourself in these moments & the truer that you are to yourself, the less disconnected and burnt out you will feel.
