6 Keys to Healing Your Nervous System
Healing your nervous system isn’t a straight, cut and dry path from point A to point B. It takes time, dedication, and support. However, there are 6 key elements required within everyone’s healing journey. Let’s chat about the six keys that you’ll need in order to unlock a healthier nervous system.
In order to heal your nervous system, you need to know what's going on before you can know what to do about it. If you aren’t aware of what releasing stored survival stress in your nervous system feels like, you may not realize what’s happening within your body. So you need to figure out what fight, flight, and freeze energies feel like for you.
Learning the science of how attachment with primary caregivers can set you up for a dysregulated stress response as well as subsequent events and the importance of healing in a timeline that isn’t going to further stress the system is another big necessity for healing your nervous system.
Healing happens in relationships. Developing connections with individuals or finding a community that you feel safe within can provide you with a corrective experience to help you reset your nervous system. Support through this healing process is absolutely crucial.
Understanding how your stress hormones, the gut/brain connection, and the functions of your brain stem will give you an idea of how exactly your autonomic nervous system has been conditioned to keep you surviving. Working with these areas in a gentle way is vital to mastering your nervous system health.
Learning how to sit with, experience, accept, and feel your emotions in a way that is contained through titration and being able to move between painful and pleasant experiences without suppressing your emotions is also a necessity for healing your nervous system.
Lastly, you must grow your ability to tolerate stress again. Your body needs to know that it is safe, even in stressful situations, in order to come back to a regulated state. This becomes easier over time, especially as you learn how to better sit with and accept your emotional responses for what they are.
